Bryars Spray Foam has been installing spray foam insulation in West Central Alabama since 2014. They believe a well-insulated home can save energy costs, create a more comfortable environment and help protect health.
Spray foam insulation is an air and vapor barrier, sealing gaps in walls, roofs and ceilings, as well as small crevices and spaces in attics. It has a high R-value per inch, allowing it to effectively insulate homes and buildings with minimal thickness. It also helps prevent air leakage, which accounts for most of the energy loss in new and existing buildings, according to the United States Department of Energy.
The Impact of Spray Foam Insulation on Indoor Air Quality
When properly installed, the air and vapor barrier created by spray foam insulation can reduce moisture infiltration that leads to wood damage and mold growth. It also prevents convective heat transfer from outside to inside a building, reducing the need for heating during colder months and cooling in hotter months.
The spray foam insulation process involves mixing two chemicals, isocyanate and polyol resin. The mixture is sprayed with a gun, expanding into a thick foam that can fill nooks and crannies. It is non-toxic only after it dries, but while it’s wet it off-gases large amounts of volatile organic compounds (VOC). The homeowner should leave the house during this time, and wear full face and respiratory protection to ensure their safety.
Some manufacturers offer low-VOC spray foam insulation, such as HandiFoam High Density and Graco’s Ecomate spray polyurethane insulation. They use blowing agents that are free of chlorofluorocarbons (CFC), hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC), and hydrogen fluorocarbons, which help reduce dependence on non-renewable resources.
